Windows NT 4.0 Server Upgrade Guide 19
Assessing Application Compatibility
When planning an upgrade, questions arise about an application’s ability to run on a new version
of an operating system. To help simplify this process, Windows Server 2003 provides a tool that
can detect application compatibility issues so that they can be fixed before upgrading. The
Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT) provides several tools that help both system professionals
and developers prepare and move to Windows Server 2003. With this toolkit, you can inventory,
test, resolve, deploy, and debug an existing application that you want to run on Windows Server
2003.
ACT 3.0 also provides tools to create installation patches for applications. Patches for known
issues with many applications already exist and are available with ACT. This section provides an
introduction to working with ACT. For more information, refer to the documentation provided with
the toolkit. See also Using the Application Compatibility Toolkit
on the Windows Server 2003 Web
site.
About ACT 3.0
ACT 3.0 provides three key tools:
Application Compatibility Analyzer 1.0
Windows Application Verifier 2.5
Compatibility Administrator 3.0
The Application Compatibility Analyzer includes a client-side Collector (Collector.exe), Merger
(Merger.exe), and Analyzer (Analyzer.exe). Collector allows information to be collected about the
computers in an organization and the software that is installed. Analyzer helps to evaluate the
inventory of software gathered by Collector. Merger combines the various collected log files into a
database file. By default, Merger enters the data into a Microsoft Access database file (.mdb), but
the logs can also be sent to a SQL Server database. The collected information can then be
compared to an online database from Microsoft of known compatibility issues for the specified
applications. This database, in many cases, provides the deployment packages needed to
address certain incompatibilities so than an application can run on Windows Server 2003.
In general, after installing ACT 3.0, you use its tools in the following order:
1. Run Collector.
2. Run Analyzer.
3. Run Application Verifier.
4. Run Compatibility Administrator.
