Windows NT 4.0 Server Upgrade Guide 8
Preparing to Upgrade
Before beginning an upgrade from Windows NT Server 4.0 to Windows Server 2003, you need a
plan that details the many tasks to be performed. If the upgrade includes Active Directory, even
more planning is recommended. Your upgrade plan assists in establishing the order in which to
upgrade servers and domains, assessing available resources, and obtaining the information
necessary to upgrade the systems in the most efficient way.
Your upgrade plan should also include all components to be upgraded and the proper upgrade
order. Dependencies among servers and applications need to be carefully examined. Hardware
needs to be inspected as well. Can the current servers be upgraded or does new hardware need
to be purchased? Are there any applications that need to be upgraded? Are there any servers that
cannot be upgraded?
Organizations can benefit from upgrading individual servers to Windows Server 2003 as well as
upgrading all servers. In this section of the guide, you’ll find information to help plan the hardware
and server migration order.
Determining the Supported Software Upgrades
To start, you must identify the operating systems that are running in the environment and
determine whether those computers can be upgraded to Windows Server 2003 or whether a
clean operating system installation must be performed.
To upgrade a Windows NT Server 4.0 computer to Windows Server 2003, Service Pack 5 (SP5)
or later must be installed. In fact, unless there is a known issue with a service pack, it is best to
install the latest service pack for the Windows NT Server 4.0 as well as any other applications that
may run on the Windows NT 4.0 servers.
The following table lists the Windows NT Server 4.0 operating systems and whether they can be
upgraded directly to different versions of Windows Server 2003. When performing an upgrade to
Windows Server 2003, most applications do not need to be reinstalled.
